Going Forward (March 2020 Update)

by confusedmuse

There's a lot going on, huh?

First, I hope everyone reading this is safe. Take care of yourselves, your family, disconnect from the news, do what you need to do. I'm not going to talk about it too much here, as I've been overwhelmed over the last week and I imagine a lot of you are too. I appreciate you for taking the time to read this update.

Second, the comic. I'm sorry that I put it on another hiatus without saying something. I ran straight into a nasty bit of art block last month, and it wasn't until recently that I was able to pull myself back out of it. During that time, I realized two things. 1) I want to finish this comic, and 2) if I'm going to do that, I have to make some changes about how I approach it. As much as I love, love, love the interactive sections of this comic, it makes planning ahead very difficult. As some of you noticed, there are things that I have set in stone for how this comic plays out (I've been working off an outline from the beginning) but every now and again, especially in the second chapter, a comment would bring up something that I hadn't fully thought through, or push the scene in a direction I hadn't expected. On an interactive level, it's amazing. I'm glad that there are people out there who are so invested in these characters and their well-being. But in terms of keeping a consistent upload schedule, it's gotten to the point that any small disruption in my day-to-day plan meant that the weekly update wasn't going to happen. And I hate keeping readers hanging.

So here's my plan going forward:

Character interaction will be limited going forward. Without getting into spoilers, I have moments marked on the outline of this comic that you, the readers, can influence. I will make it very clear in the author's comments on the page when these moments are happening. For instance, there is one coming up at the end of this chapter, and another at the beginning of the next chapter. The idea is that these moments will help set the tone for the chapter, and then I can find a balance between my script and the interactive changes without having to worry about juggling them week to week. Hopefully this will result in more consistent updates, and maybe even more frequent ones!

I've been using the downtime caused by current events to nail down the rest of this chapter and the next. I've revamped my outline once again, and there's a clear path forward. Here's a REDACTED version of what the table of contents looks like:
An image of Negatedtale's outline, with future chapter names blurred out.
As you can see, I've got a lot of plans and a long way to go! Thank you for sticking with me so far, and I hope that you're as excited to see the rest of this story as I am. Stay safe out there, and as always, I'll see you with the next page soon.
