Negatedtale Will Return (+ Happy Birthday Aster)

by confusedmuse
Hey.

Kept you waiting, huh?

The only thing I can say to explain the too-long break is, 2020 sure was a year. It felt like every time I gathered enough of myself together to try to work on a page or at least post a blog update, something else happened to crash back down on my motivation. I barely drew anything at all over the last year. A lot of things happened, the majority of which I'm not comfortable sharing openly online, but since we all existed in the hell known as 2020, I'm sure most of you can still relate without going into details.

As far as the comic went, I had more success with writing and planning than I did with drawing. The restructuring I talked about in the last two blog posts is basically done from an outline perspective, and I have several finished chapters worth of script. In fact, I'd planned to come back in January for the comic's anniversary, but due to severe computer programs - my screen broke and a second lockdown meant that no one was open to fix it - I was without a computer for several months. Thankfully I've had no further tech issues, but now my focus is on creating backlog of pages before I start officially updating again. It sucks that this comic has been on hold for so long, but I never want to go on a break this long ever again, and a backlog will hopefully be the best buffer against that.

So as things stand right now, I'm hoping that Negatedtale will return in the summer. I won't put a concrete date on it, since over the past year I've learned just how chaotic things on my end can get, but expect new pages Soon(tm).

In the meantime, Happy Birthday Aster! It won't be too long before we all see her again. 💙 Stay safe out there, and I'll talk to you all again soon!

Happy Birthday Aster!

Hi everyone! Sorry for a long time without letting you all know what's been going on. I'm still fine, and I hope you all are too! I've been using the extra time while my job is closed to work on a lot of writing for the comic, and I'm slowly chipping my way through that [redacted] outline I shared last time. Right now the rest of the chapter has been drafted, and I'm moving on into some final editing before going back to thumbnails and other page processes. In other words, there is not a lot that I can share with you right now, but things are moving and hopefully I'll be able to bring back updates very soon!

In the meantime, I have a small piece of art to share! As those of you who've followed the comic on Tumblr and DA know, I draw a piece of art for Aster every year on her birthday, and today is the day! I've also been thinking a lot about experimenting with chibi-styled art recently, so I thought, why not start with Aster?

Ta-da! I hope that you all enjoy the art! And as always, thank you for your patience in waiting for updates. This comic means a lot to me, and the fact that there are people out there waiting to read it means the world. Stay safe out there, and I'll see you soon!

Going Forward (March 2020 Update)

by confusedmuse
Hello!

So.

There's a lot going on, huh?

First, I hope everyone reading this is safe. Take care of yourselves, your family, disconnect from the news, do what you need to do. I'm not going to talk about it too much here, as I've been overwhelmed over the last week and I imagine a lot of you are too. I appreciate you for taking the time to read this update.

Second, the comic. I'm sorry that I put it on another hiatus without saying something. I ran straight into a nasty bit of art block last month, and it wasn't until recently that I was able to pull myself back out of it. During that time, I realized two things. 1) I want to finish this comic, and 2) if I'm going to do that, I have to make some changes about how I approach it. As much as I love, love, love the interactive sections of this comic, it makes planning ahead very difficult. As some of you noticed, there are things that I have set in stone for how this comic plays out (I've been working off an outline from the beginning) but every now and again, especially in the second chapter, a comment would bring up something that I hadn't fully thought through, or push the scene in a direction I hadn't expected. On an interactive level, it's amazing. I'm glad that there are people out there who are so invested in these characters and their well-being. But in terms of keeping a consistent upload schedule, it's gotten to the point that any small disruption in my day-to-day plan meant that the weekly update wasn't going to happen. And I hate keeping readers hanging.

So here's my plan going forward:

Character interaction will be limited going forward. Without getting into spoilers, I have moments marked on the outline of this comic that you, the readers, can influence. I will make it very clear in the author's comments on the page when these moments are happening. For instance, there is one coming up at the end of this chapter, and another at the beginning of the next chapter. The idea is that these moments will help set the tone for the chapter, and then I can find a balance between my script and the interactive changes without having to worry about juggling them week to week. Hopefully this will result in more consistent updates, and maybe even more frequent ones!

I've been using the downtime caused by current events to nail down the rest of this chapter and the next. I've revamped my outline once again, and there's a clear path forward. Here's a REDACTED version of what the table of contents looks like:
An image of Negatedtale's outline, with future chapter names blurred out.
As you can see, I've got a lot of plans and a long way to go! Thank you for sticking with me so far, and I hope that you're as excited to see the rest of this story as I am. Stay safe out there, and as always, I'll see you with the next page soon.

Here We Are

by confusedmuse
Hello readers new and old! I'm Muse, the author of Negatedtale, and a Smackjeeves refugee! Please pardon the mess while I tinker with the website and upload the backlog, but so far I am very happy with the options presented by Comic Fury! I'm also extremely happy that there are already new subscribers and comments before I even get everything all caught up--I didn't realize that uploading the backlog would put me on the "recently updated" part of Comic Fury, and for a second I was worried that I'd bother the community. So to those people, thank you and welcome! Negatedtale has been running for nearly three years now, and I have a lot of pages that I still need to put up (it may take me a few days), but I hope that you enjoy the backlog in the meantime! Feel free to say hi in the comments, and I hope to make this a nice new home for this passion project of mine. heart As always, thank you for reading!
